About the Job

We are seeking an experienced Asphalt Roller Operator to join our paving crew. This is a hands-on field position responsible for compacting asphalt to meet density, smoothness, and finished-surface requirements.

This role is critical to the long-term performance of the pavement. The right candidate understands rolling patterns, timing, and how to adjust compaction techniques based on mix type, lift thickness, temperature, weather, and jobsite conditions. The Roller Operator works closely with the Paving Foreman, Paver Operator, Screed Operator, and the rest of the crew to maintain a safe, productive, and high-quality paving operation.

Key Responsibilities:

Operate asphalt rollers to compact and smooth freshly placed asphalt.
Follow proper rolling patterns to achieve required density, smoothness, and surface-finish standards.
Monitor mat temperature, density, and appearance throughout the compaction process.
Coordinate closely with the Paver Operator, Screed Operator, Paving Foreman, and crew to maintain efficient production.
Adjust rolling techniques based on mix type, lift thickness, temperature, weather conditions, and jobsite conditions.
Identify and communicate surface issues such as shoving, cracking, checking, segregation, roller marks, or inadequate compaction.
Maintain appropriate roller speed, vibration settings, amplitude, and rolling sequence to avoid damaging the asphalt mat.
Perform daily equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance.
Maintain clean, safe, and properly functioning equipment.
Report equipment issues, safety concerns, or production challenges to the Paving Foreman promptly.
Assist with jobsite setup, cleanup, traffic control, and other crew duties as needed.
Follow all company safety procedures, traffic-control requirements, and jobsite rules.
Ensure work meets company quality standards, project specifications, and applicable state and federal requirements.

Qualifications:

Minimum 2 years of asphalt roller operation experience preferred.
Strong understanding of asphalt compaction, rolling patterns, mat temperature, density, and finished-surface requirements.
Experience operating steel-wheel, pneumatic, and/or combination asphalt rollers preferred.
Ability to recognize and respond to changing paving conditions in real time.
Ability to communicate effectively with the Paving Foreman and paving crew.
Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding work as needed.
Willingness to work early mornings, overtime, and occasional weekends as project schedules require.
Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.
