JOB SUMMARY:
The Carpenter will be responsible for constructing, erecting and installing and repairing structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, using carpenter’s hand tools and power tools, and conforming to all building codes.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Studies blueprints, sketches or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, such as lumber of fiberboard and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
- Selects specified type of lumber or other materials.
- Prepares layout using rule, framing square and calipers.
- Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials, using pencil, chalk and marking gage.
- Shapes materials to prescribed measurements, using saws, chisels and planes.
- Assembles cut and shaped materials and fasten them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
- Verifies trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter’s level
- Erects framework for structures and lays sub-flooring.
- Builds stairs and lays out and installs partitions and cabinet work.
- Covers sub-floor with building paper to keep out moisture and lays hardwood parquet and woodstrip block floors by nailing floors to sub-floors or cementing them to mastic or asphalt base.
- Applies shock absorbing, sound deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
- Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim and finish hardware, such as locks, letter drops, and kick plates.
- Constructs forms and chutes for pouring concrete. Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
- Cleans work area and material being installed.
- High school diploma preferred. Completion of apprenticeship program required
- Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy
- Apply shop mathematics to solve problems
- Plan work and select proper tools
- Compare and see differences in the size, shape and form of lines, figures and objects
- Picture solid objects from drawings or diagrams
- Perform a variety of duties which may change often
- Rate information using standards that can be measured or checked
- Must be able to pass security clearance.
- Must have own tools.
- Manual dexterity, sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time.
- Frequent climbing stairs/ladders, bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, reaching and crouching.
- Occasional work on ladders, scaffolding or high structures.
- Visual acuity to read printed and electronic documents.
- Hearing capacity to receive, perceive and react to common construction environment auditory stimuli.
- Lifting and/or exerting of force up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds of lifting/force frequently and up to 10 pounds of lifting/force constantly to move objects.
- Frequent driving of motor vehicles.
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments with possible exposure to noise, dust, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, moving objects, sharp edges, and all types of weather and temperature conditions.
