Carpenter Foreman

The Lead Carpenter Foreman is a hands-on working foreman responsible for leading rough carpentry scopes on active modular construction projects in the San Jose and greater Bay Area market. This role combines skilled carpentry leadership with an introduction to MODSET's proprietary rigging and crane-setting operations — all training in rigging and modular setting protocols is provided by MODSET on the job.

The ideal candidate is an experienced rough carpenter who takes ownership of the work, leads by example, and is ready to expand their skill set into the specialized world of engineered modular assembly. This is a local, resident-based position with the majority of work occurring in and around San Jose, CA.

Rough Carpentry Leadership

• Lead field carpentry crews through all phases of rough carpentry on modular construction projects, including framing, blocking, sheathing, and structural connections at module interfaces
• Read and interpret construction documents, structural drawings, and modular assembly plans to direct crew work accurately
• Ensure all carpentry work meets project tolerances, manufacturer specifications, and applicable code requirements
• Coordinate daily with the General Foreman to sequence carpentry activities in alignment with crane pick schedules and site logistics
• Maintain quality control on all rough carpentry scopes, identifying and correcting deficiencies before they affect downstream trades

Rigging & Crane Setting (OJT Provided)

• Participate in and progressively lead rigging and crane-assisted module placement operations under the direct guidance of MODSET's General Foreman and Lead Setters
• Learn and apply MODSET's rigging protocols, including safe attachment of lifting hardware, load securement, and communication with crane operators
• Develop competency as a ground-level crew member during crane lifts, including tag line management, module guidance, and placement verification
• Advance toward signal person certification and active crane-setting responsibilities as skills and experience develop

Crew Supervision & Safety

• Supervise and mentor carpenter crew members, promoting a positive, accountable, and safety-first work culture
• Conduct daily toolbox talks and enforce all site-specific safety plans and OSHA requirements
• Ensure crew compliance with fall protection, PPE, and tool/equipment safety protocols at all times
• Identify and proactively communicate site hazards, schedule conflicts, or material deficiencies to the General Foreman

Administrative & Documentation

• Ensure timely crew submittal of timesheets, expense reports, and safety documentation
• Maintain daily field logs documenting crew activities, progress, and any field conditions or variances
• Track and manage carpentry material deliveries and site inventory in coordination with project management

Qualifications & Requirements
Required

• 3–5 years of experience in rough carpentry on commercial, multifamily, or modular construction projects
• Prior experience leading or supervising a carpentry crew on active construction sites
• Ability to read and interpret structural drawings and construction documents
• Strong working knowledge of wood-frame construction, blocking, hardware installation, and structural connections
• Commitment to safety and demonstrated knowledge of OSHA construction standards
• Strong communication and leadership skills; ability to foster a productive and positive crew environment
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to San Jose area project sites

Preferred

• Experience on modular, panelized, or prefabricated construction projects
• OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction certification
• Forklift operation certification or experience
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
• Familiarity with prevailing wage projects and certified payroll requirements

Training & Development

• Rigging fundamentals — safe rigging practices, hardware inspection, load attachment, and lift planning
• Signal person orientation and pathway toward certification

• Equipment certifications as applicable (forklift, aerial lifts)
• Daily reporting tools and administrative systems
