Description

Cabinet Maker Needed for Zen Space Makers

We love what we do. We have fun most of the time. On our best days there's a real joy to doing what we do and making what we make.
Zen Space Makers grew out of the custom carpentry work of our founder, Sander Hicks, who has a background in business, design, media, and construction. He's been building in NYC since 1996, became a licensed contractor in 2013, and has picked up two awards from the City of New York.

Before carpentry, he founded Vox Pop, a coffeehouse and community center in central Brooklyn that grew into a two-million-dollar enterprise with real roots in the neighborhood.

Since launching as Zen Carpentry in 2013 (renamed Zen Space Makers in 2016), we've completed over 800 loft bed and custom furniture projects including an innovative cubby staircase design with built-in doors and drawers that's become something of a signature. We've earned an A on Angie's List and 5 stars on Thumbtack.

The name isn't just branding. One of our working principles is that how you do the little things is how you do everything. The joints nobody will ever see get the same care as the ones that will. We clean the ceiling, not just the floor. We communicate visually, with drawings and sketches, not just words, so the whole crew is building the same thing in their heads.

Beyond loft beds, we take on custom short-term projects around the city, and right now we're also building a giant house out in Pennsylvania. The company's growing in some interesting ways, and we're looking to add a cabinet maker to the team.

What you'd be doing:

Building and installing custom loft beds and cabinetry for NYC apartments
Working from drawings/specs, with room for your own craftsmanship judgment
Occasional on-site installs in tight apartment conditions — patience and precision matter more than speed

What we're looking for:

Solid cabinet making / fine woodworking experience

Comfortable with [tools/shop setup]
Able to work independently and communicate clearly about timelines
NYC-based or able to get here reliably
