Level I, II, & III Diesel Bus Mechanic

Location: San Fernando, CA 91340

Job Type: Full-Time
Pay: $28.00 – $38.00 per hour (DOE)

Big Bus Tours Los Angeles is the world's leading open-top sightseeing tour company, providing unforgettable experiences to millions of guests annually. We operate a diverse fleet of sightseeing vehicles throughout Los Angeles, including double-decker buses, Mercedes Sprinter vans, and Ford F-550 vehicles.

We are seeking motivated and experienced Level I, II, and III Diesel Mechanics to join our growing engineering team. This position offers the opportunity to work on a unique fleet while developing your skills in diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and vehicle repair.

Weekend availability is required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Preventive Maintenance

Perform scheduled preventive maintenance services

Conduct lubrication, fluid changes, and filter replacements
Complete maintenance records and repair documentation accurately
DOT Inspections

Perform and document 45-Day DOT inspections

Ensure fleet compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and company standards
Identify and correct safety-related defects
Diagnostics & Troubleshooting

Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic issues
Utilize diagnostic software, scan tools, and schematics
Troubleshoot engine, transmission, brake, HVAC, and electrical systems
Repair & Component Replacement

Repair and replace:

Diesel engines
Automatic transmissions
Air brake systems
Steering and suspension components
Cooling systems
Hoses and belts
Air conditioning and HVAC systems
Electrical wiring and electronic control systems
Charging and starting systems
Safety & Compliance

Maintain a safe and organized work environment

Follow OSHA, DOT, EPA, and company safety standards
Properly handle and dispose of hazardous materials
Road Calls

Respond to road service calls as needed

Diagnose and repair vehicles in the field
Coordinate vehicle recovery when required
Shop Operations

Maintain tools and equipment

Assist with parts inventory and tracking
Support team members and cross-train as needed
Knowledge & Skills

Ability to read and speak English

Technical knowledge of major vehicle systems and diesel equipment
Ability to confidently read and interpret electrical schematics
Understanding of electrical circuits
Knowledge of air and hydraulic brake systems, including troubleshooting and repair
Knowledge of suspension and steering systems, including troubleshooting and repair
Computer skills for basic data entry into databases
Ability to use computers and diagnostic tools to diagnose vehicle systems
Strong understanding and ability to use hand and power tools
Ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve with patience and attention to detail
Strong analytical, electronic, and mathematical skills
Working Conditions

Environmental Considerations

Exposure to constant or intermittent noise levels that may cause fatigue or potential hearing loss
Exposure to high and low temperatures that may cause significant body discomfort
Exposure to dust, fumes, vapors, and mists that could affect occupational health
Physical Considerations

Exposure to whole-body vibrations during the work shift

Work performed inside various types of vehicles and equipment during repairs
Occasional exposure to hazardous equipment, situations, and conditions
Work performed in various lighting conditions ranging from dim to bright
Ability to stand for extended periods or work in awkward positions when repairing equipment
Occasional climbing to reach elevated parts of vehicles or equipment
Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 80 lbs
Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent required

Minimum of 1-5+ years of experience as a heavy diesel mechanic/technician, preferably with experience working on buses
Trade school, ASE certification, mechanical training, or equivalent experience is highly preferred
Technical knowledge of major vehicle systems and diesel equipment is required
D.O.T. inspection experience required
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required
CDL preferred but not required
Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends
Minimum Requirements

1+ year of hands-on diesel mechanic experience
Valid Driver's License with clean driving history
Ability to pass pre-employment screening
Ability to work weekends and flexible schedules
Strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship
Preferred Qualifications

Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred for Level II
