Electrical Journeyman Duties and Responsibilities

An Electrical Journeyman installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical wiring, equipment, and systems in commercial, industrial, or residential facilities. The position requires working safely, independently, and according to electrical codes, approved plans, and company procedures.

Installation Duties

Install electrical wiring, conduit, panels, switches, receptacles, lighting fixtures, transformers, and control systems.
Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, specifications, and work orders.
Measure, cut, bend, thread, and install electrical conduit.
Pull, terminate, label, and test electrical conductors and cables.
Install circuit breakers, disconnects, junction boxes, and distribution
equipment.
Connect motors, machinery, generators, and other electrical equipment.
Ensure installations comply with approved plans and applicable electrical codes.
Verify that circuits and equipment are properly grounded and bonded.

Maintenance and Repair

Perform preventive maintenance on electrical systems and equipment.
Inspect wiring, panels, connections, and electrical components for damage or wear.
Diagnose electrical failures using meters and testing equipment.
Repair or replace defective wiring, breakers, switches, motors, fixtures, and components.
Respond to power failures and electrical emergencies.
Test completed repairs to confirm safe and proper operation.
Document maintenance, inspections, repairs, and replaced components.
Recommend equipment repairs, upgrades, or replacements.

Safety Responsibilities

Follow all company safety policies and applicable OSHA requirements.
Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
Apply lockout/tagout procedures before working on energized equipment.
Verify the absence of voltage before beginning work when required.
Identify electrical hazards and report unsafe conditions immediately.
Maintain safe distances from energized equipment.
Use properly rated, inspected, and maintained tools and test instruments.
Maintain clean and organized work areas.
Participate in safety meetings, job-hazard analyses, and required training.
Never perform energized electrical work without proper authorization, training, and protective procedures.

Troubleshooting and Testing

Use multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers, and other diagnostic equipment.
Test voltage, current, resistance, grounding, and circuit continuity.
Trace circuits and locate shorts, open circuits, overloads, and ground faults.
Troubleshoot motors, motor controls, relays, contactors, sensors, and control panels.
Analyze electrical problems and determine appropriate corrective actions.
Confirm that repaired or installed systems operate according to specifications.

Leadership and Coordination

Work independently with limited supervision.
Provide guidance and instruction to electrical apprentices and helpers.
Inspect apprentice work for safety, quality, and code compliance.
Coordinate with supervisors, engineers, contractors, maintenance personnel, and other trades.
Communicate material, equipment, and scheduling needs to management.
Report job delays, unsafe conditions, and changes in the work scope.
Maintain professional communication with customers and facility representatives.

Tools, Materials, and Documentation

Maintain and properly use electrical tools, ladders, lifts, and testing equipment.
Estimate the materials and labor needed to complete assigned work.
Request and organize electrical materials and supplies.
Keep accurate records of completed work, inspections, and material usage.
Update panel schedules, circuit labels, and electrical documentation.
Protect company tools, equipment, materials, and customer property.

Common Qualifications

Completion of an approved electrical apprenticeship program.
Valid journeyman electrician license or certification when required.
Knowledge of electrical theory, wiring methods, and applicable electrical codes.
Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical instructions.
Ability to safely use electrical testing equipment and hand and power tools.
Ability to work on ladders, lifts, rooftops, and in confined spaces when necessary.
Ability to lift and carry electrical equipment and materials.
Valid driver’s license when travel between job sites is required.

An Electrical Journeyman may perform additional duties assigned by the
electrical supervisor or project manager based on operational and project requirements.
