About the Company
Colonial Barns Inc. designs and builds custom storage sheds, garages, barns, and other non-habitable outdoor buildings across Hampton Roads. We hold the electrical contractor license for this work and need a licensed electrician to complete field installations on our buildings throughout the Virginia Peninsula.
Position Summary
Contract role for an electrician who can work independently with limited supervision. You complete electrical rough-in and finish on our structures under Colonial Barns’ license. Work is project-based across Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, York County, Williamsburg / James City County and nearby. Volume follows sales and job-site readiness.
Primary Responsibilities
- Install electrical systems in new sheds, garages, and barns per plans, specs, and current NEC / Virginia code.
- Rough-in and finish: panels/subpanels, branch circuits, receptacles, switches, lighting, and specialty outlets (including RV receptacles where specified).
- Pull permits under the company license and coordinate inspections with local AHJs.
- Work from drawings and field measurements; catch conflicts before they delay a job.
- Keep sites clean and professional; send status, issues, and material needs without being chased.
- Document work (photos, as-builts, inspection results) so jobs can close cleanly.
- Follow company safety practices and treat customer property accordingly.
- Current Virginia Journeyman Electrician tradesman license (Master welcome).
- Ability to legally perform electrical work under a licensed electrical contractor.
- Proven experience installing residential / light-commercial systems independently.
- Working knowledge of the current NEC and typical Peninsula inspection practices.
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and a complete personal tool set.
- Able to work alone on job sites with limited day-to-day supervision.
- Clear text/email communication.
- Must pass a background check for residential customer property.
- Outbuilding / garage / shop packages (subpanels, 30/50A RV outlets, shop lighting, weatherproof devices).
- Recent inspection history with Peninsula AHJs.
- Own service vehicle stocked for small-building electrical work.
- Able to pull material or work from company material lists.
- Independent contractor (1099), not an employee.
- Work is performed under Colonial Barns’ electrical license; the contractor does not bid or contract this work in their own name.
- Pay is per-job.
- Primary coverage is the Peninsula
- Hours follow job-site readiness; weekday work with some flexibility around inspections and customers.
