Equipment Mechanic I:
$36.66 – $42.97/hour
$76,252.80 – $89,977.60/year

Equipment Mechanic II:
$42.19 – $50.35/hour
$87,755.20 – $104,728/year

Multiple positions are available. Depending on your qualifications, experience, and skills, you may be hired at the Equipment Mechanic I or Equipment Mechanic II level.

🔧 About the Job

The City of Santa Rosa's Transportation and Public Works Department – Fleet Services Section has immediate openings for experienced Equipment Mechanics.

Fleet Services provides vehicle and equipment services to City departments, including maintaining a diverse municipal fleet of:

Passenger vehicles

Light trucks

Police vehicles

Fire vehicles

Transit buses

Heavy equipment

Other municipal equipment

The mechanic shop operates from 5:30 AM to midnight, with different shift options available, including 9/80 and 4/10 schedules.

An eligibility list will be established through this recruitment and may be used to fill current and future regular and temporary vacancies while the list is active.

🛠️ What You'll Do

Depending on the level and assignment, duties may include:

Inspect, service, diagnose, repair, rebuild, and maintain City vehicles and equipment

Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, fuel, and other systems

Perform preventive maintenance and general overhaul work

Make field repairs and respond to service calls

Rebuild engines and other vehicle components

Repair police, fire, transit, passenger, and heavy vehicles

Perform welding, fabrication, and auto body repairs

Design and fabricate specialized brackets and equipment

Read repair manuals, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical information

Estimate repair needs and costs

Maintain accurate computerized and manual service records

Communicate repair status with customers and City staff

Pick up parts and deliver vehicles to outside repair facilities

Keep the shop, equipment, tools, and work areas clean and safe

Stay current with industry standards and repair practices

⚙️ Equipment Mechanic I

Equipment Mechanic I performs a wide range of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair work under direction.

Typical responsibilities include:

Vehicle and equipment inspections

Preventive maintenance

Diagnosis and repair

Brake and lubrication systems

Electrical and engine systems

Field repairs

Welding and fabrication

Recordkeeping and computerized maintenance tracking

Installation and fabrication of equipment and brackets

⚙️ Equipment Mechanic II

Equipment Mechanic II is the full journey-level classification and performs more complex diagnostic, rebuilding, repair, and fabrication work with greater independence.

Responsibilities may include:

Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics

Engine and component rebuilding

Cooling, brake, fuel injection, valve, and pump systems

Major equipment overhauls

Welding and fabrication

Designing specialized equipment

Repairing and fabricating vehicle components

Working from plans, sketches, schematics, and verbal instructions

Field repairs and complex maintenance assignments

👨‍🔧 We're Looking For

The successful candidate will be:

An experienced vehicle/equipment mechanic

Safety-oriented and knowledgeable about workplace hazards

Self-motivated and dependable

Able to work independently

Comfortable working as part of a team

Able to communicate effectively

Experienced with municipal, commercial, automotive, or heavy equipment repair

The City is looking for candidates with two or more years of professional journey-level experience performing a broad range of maintenance and repair work on vehicles and equipment found in a municipal fleet.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may qualify.

🎓 Education

A typical qualifying background includes education equivalent to completion of 12th grade.

Specialized automotive, diesel, mechanical, welding, or related training is desirable.
