Equipment Operator (with CDL license) — Excavator / Skid Steer

Our team is growing again! We have started to take on more commercial work and require another operator and CDL driver to join our team.

BTB Site Development is a woman-owned, full-service site preparation and demolition company serving Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, and Manatee Counties. We specialize in subdivision development, grading, excavation, demolition, trenching, debris hauling, and land clearing.

Position Summary

The Equipment Operator will operate and maintain heavy equipment—including excavators, skid steers, and haul trucks, which is why a CDL license is required—and will transport equipment and materials between job sites. This position requires a skilled and safety-conscious operator with experience in excavation, grading, and underground utilities, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with ground crews and project managers.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

• Safely operate excavators, skid steers, and other heavy equipment in accordance with company and OSHA standards.
• Perform daily pre-operation inspections and safety checks (fluids, tracks, attachments, etc.).

• Conduct preventive maintenance including cleaning, lubrication, and refueling.
• Excavate trenches to proper depth, line, and grade as directed by the foreman or plans.

• Set and backfill utilities including water, storm, and sanitary sewer systems when required.
• Read grade stakes and laser levels to ensure accuracy and production efficiency.

• Properly rig and lower pipe, manhole barrels, and materials into trenches following safe work procedures.
• Load and unload materials, equipment, and debris safely.

• Transport equipment and materials using company vehicles and trailers (valid CDL required).
• Maintain constant situational awareness when operating near workers, roadways, and utilities.

• Train or assist in training junior operators or laborers on safe and efficient operation.
• Perform trench work in compliance with OSHA excavation and ground disturbance regulations.

Safety & Compliance

• Work safely and adhere to BTB’s Safety Program and all federal, state, and local regulations.
• Attend and participate in daily job hazard analysis (JHA) and toolbox talks.

• Utilize PPE (hard hat, safety vest, gloves, boots, hearing and eye protection).
• Maintain awareness of surroundings, pedestrians, and traffic at all times.

- Immediately report any unsafe conditions, near misses, or incidents to supervision.

• Collaborate with foremen, ground crews, subcontractors, and inspectors professionally.
• Arrive to work on time, ready to perform, and maintain consistent attendance.

Qualifications

• Required: Valid CDL (Class A or B) and clean driving record.
• Required: 1-3 years of experience in excavation, grading, or underground utility work.

• Required: Proven experience operating skid steers and excavators.
• Knowledge of job site safety, trenching regulations, and ground disturbance standards.

• Understanding of road construction materials, elevation, and grade work.
• Basic mechanical knowledge for equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.

• Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly and perform physical labor as needed.
• Must pass pre-employment drug screen, background check, and MVR check.

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Working Conditions

• Work performed outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, humidity, rain, dust).
• Frequent climbing, bending, lifting, and operating machinery.

• Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate PPE is required.
• Overtime and weekend work may be required based on project schedule.

Pay & Benefits

• Pay Range: $24-30 /hour (based on experience and certifications)
• Skid steer + excavator + CDL combination experience near the upper range.

• Premium rates for finish grading and underground utility experience.
• Overtime available (time-and-a-half).
