Estimator

Description

The structural steel erector estimator is responsible for analyzing plans, specifications, and structural drawings to develop detailed cost estimates for steel erection scopes. This includes takeoffs of beams, columns, joists, decking, connection hardware, crane time, labor hours, and safety requirements. The estimator works closely with project managers, erectors, and fabricators to ensure bids are accurate and aligned with field realities.

Plan & spec review — interpret structural drawings, details, and erection plans

Steel quantity takeoff — calculate LF, tonnage, member counts, decking, and hardware

Labor estimating — determine man‑hours for erection, bolt‑up, decking, welding, and rigging

Crane & equipment planning — size cranes, lifts, and rigging gear based on picks and site constraints

Site condition analysis — evaluate access, laydown, sequencing, and safety impacts

Cost development — compile labor, equipment, consumables, subcontractor quotes, and overhead

Bid preparation — assemble proposals, clarifications, alternates, and exclusions

Vendor coordination — obtain crane quotes, trucking rates, and specialty subcontractor pricing

Change order pricing — evaluate scope changes and prepare cost impacts

Collaboration with field teams — ensure estimates reflect real erection methods and production rates
