Experienced Automotive Technician
Description
# Experienced Automotive Technician
## Diagnostic and Repair Position — Berkeley, California
Art’s Automotive is looking for an experienced technician who enjoys solving difficult problems and wants to work without flat-rate pressure.
We are an independent shop in Berkeley specializing in Toyota, Honda, Subaru, and Mazda vehicles. You’ll work on everything from maintenance and mechanical repairs to electrical problems, drivability issues, hybrids, network faults, and other challenging diagnostic jobs.
This is a diagnostic **and** repair position. You should be able to find the cause of a problem, clearly explain what you found, and perform the repair.
## Why you might like working here
Our crew is unusually stable. Most of us have worked together for many years, and our average employee tenure is close to 20 years.
This is a true hourly position. You get paid for all the time you work, including diagnostic time. You won’t lose money because a customer takes time to approve a repair, a part is delayed, or a difficult problem takes longer than expected.
We don’t have sales quotas, commissions, or flat-rate pressure. We want you to recommend what the car needs, not sell as much work as possible.
We provide:
- Medical and dental benefits
- Retirement plan with employer contribution
- Paid training
- Paid time off
- Uniforms and protective equipment
- Factory-level scan tools
- Service information and wiring diagrams
- Special tools and shared shop equipment
- Quality parts and fluids
## How we work
We want repairs to be accurate, clean, and lasting.
When you diagnose a problem, we expect you to test before replacing parts. We’ll give you the tools, information, and time you need to work through it properly.
You’ll work with experienced technicians who understand electrical systems, hybrids, computer controls, and modern mechanical systems. We often talk through difficult problems together. Asking someone to take a second look is normal here.
You’ll decide how to approach a diagnostic problem and tell us what testing you need. We understand that diagnosis is real work and that not every problem can be solved in fifteen minutes.
## The work may include
- Electrical and drivability diagnosis
- Check-engine-light and running-problem diagnosis
- Hybrid vehicle service and repair
- Network and communication problems
- Brake, steering, and suspension repairs
- Cooling-system and air-conditioning work
- Engine sealing and timing work
- General maintenance and mechanical repair
- Larger mechanical jobs
- Using scan data, wiring diagrams, scopes, meters, and service information
- Writing clear notes about your findings and recommendations
## What we’re looking for
You should have several years of professional automotive repair experience and feel comfortable doing both diagnostic and mechanical work.
We don’t expect you to have seen every possible failure. Nobody has. We do expect you to work through unfamiliar problems step by step and support your conclusion with test results.
You should have:
- Strong mechanical and electrical fundamentals
- Good testing habits
- The ability to use wiring diagrams and service information
- Experience with professional scan tools
- The ability to perform clean, high-quality repairs
- A professional tool set suitable for an experienced technician
- A valid driver’s license
- Clear written and verbal communication
- A willingness to keep learning
## Pay
**$50 to $70 per hour**, depending on your experience, diagnostic ability, and overall skill level.
This is an hourly position, not flat rate.
Please contact us even if you are an exceptional candidate whose pay requirements fall outside this range.
