ESTIMATOR

Description

Freelance Commercial Electrical Estimator

Remote | Project-Based | Independent Contractor

EMPWR Electric is seeking an experienced commercial electrical estimator to assist with select small- to medium-sized commercial projects on a freelance, project-by-project basis.

This is not a full-time position or a daily bidding role. We are looking for a dependable estimator we can call on when the right commercial opportunities become available and our internal workload does not allow us to complete the estimate. The ideal candidate can independently review bid documents and produce an accurate, organized, submission-ready electrical estimate.

Responsibilities

  • Review construction drawings, specifications, addenda, and scope documents
  • Perform complete electrical material and labor takeoffs
  • Develop detailed estimates for labor, materials, equipment, rentals, subcontractors, permits, and other project-related costs
  • Prepare fixture, device, feeder, panel, and equipment schedules when required
  • Identify inclusions, exclusions, allowances, alternates, and potential scope gaps
  • Review one-line diagrams, electrical schedules, site plans, and architectural drawings
  • Obtain or assist with vendor and supplier pricing when needed
  • Evaluate project complexity, labor requirements, lead times, and potential risks
  • Prepare bid breakdowns, clarifications, value-engineering options, and change-order estimates
  • Maintain organized estimating worksheets and supporting documentation
  • Communicate questions and submit RFIs when plans or specifications are unclear
  • Deliver estimates within the agreed-upon deadline
  • Be available for occasional revisions or follow-up questions after an estimate is submitted
Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of electrical estimating experience
  • Strong experience estimating small- and medium-sized commercial electrical projects
  • Thorough understanding of commercial electrical installations, materials, labor requirements, and construction methods
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code and applicable commercial electrical standards
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, architectural, mechanical, and civil drawings
  • Experience with estimating software, digital takeoff programs, spreadsheets, and PDF plan-review tools
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify missing or conflicting information
  • Reliable communication and the ability to meet agreed-upon deadlines
  • Field experience as an electrician, project manager, or electrical superintendent is highly preferred
  • Familiarity with Texas and Austin-area commercial construction practices, pricing, permitting, and labor conditions is a plus
Types of Projects

Projects may include commercial tenant improvements, retail spaces, offices, restaurants, warehouses, schools, service upgrades, lighting projects, equipment installations, renovations, and other small- to medium-sized commercial electrical scopes.

Compensation

This is a freelance, independent-contractor opportunity. Compensation will generally be structured as a negotiated flat fee for each project. Pricing will be determined according to the size and complexity of the project, the quality of the available plans, required turnaround time, and expected deliverables.

To Apply

Please submit the following:

  • A summary of your commercial electrical estimating experience
  • Types and typical sizes of projects you have estimated
  • Estimating and takeoff software you use
  • Your general availability and typical turnaround time
  • Your preferred project-based pricing structure
  • Examples of previous estimates or takeoffs, with confidential information removed
  • Professional references, if available
We are looking to establish a long-term working relationship with an accurate, responsive estimator who can become our preferred resource for select commercial bidding opportunities.
