General Marine Mechanic
Description
Tarpon Marine Services (TMS) is looking for a General Marine Mechanic. The General Marine Mechanic is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, removing and installing mechanical systems on yachts, catamarans and commercial vessels. This includes work on diesel engines, propulsion systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical, and auxiliary shipboard machinery. The role requires advanced technical skills, adherence to TMS safety practices and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair marine engines, transmissions/drives, sail drives, and generators.
- Perform diagnostics and repairs on plumbing, fuel, lube oil, and water systems (fresh and wastewater).
- Install, maintain, and repair hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
- Service propulsion and steering systems, including propellers, rudders, shafts, pumps, cutlass bearings, rudder bearings, and shaft
- Maintain, repair, and install shipboard machinery such as cranes, davits, winches, swim platforms, and valves.
- Work with condensers, heat exchangers, and cooling systems.
- General maintenance on electrical and electronics systems such as 12/24V systems, underwater lights, shore power and navigation
- Assist with vessel haul-outs for inspections and repairs.
- Assist during inspections with USCG, ABS or other outside vendors and technicians for systems such as fire protection equipment,
- Monitor and assist with maintaining inventory of spare consumables and shop supply components.
- Follow TMS safety practices and maintain knowledge of vessel terminology.
- Ensure work areas remain clean, organized, and safe.
- Maintain professionalism with coworkers, subcontractors, and clients.
- Complete projects with strong attention to quality control and timely delivery.
- Follow Safety and Environmental rules and complete required job-related training.
- Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task
- Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately.
Technical and Physical Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent technical school training required
- 5 years of experience required
- ABYC and/or manufacturer certifications preferred
- Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
- Must carry own tools
- Ability to work in confined spaces
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to work in indoor/outdoor environments with exposure to changing weather conditions.
- Experience with both gas and diesel engines preferred
- Any skills considered standard that a Technician (Mechanic) should possess
- Be flexible with working hours, including potential overtime, to support project timelines.
