Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled, self-motivated Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in a fast-paced metal recycling and industrial processing environment. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on heavy equipment and industrial machinery. This position requires a strong mechanical aptitude, excellent electrical and hydraulic diagnostic skills, and the ability to work safely under pressure while minimizing equipment downtime.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain heavy equipment and industrial processing equipment.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and service manuals.
- Troubleshoot electrical systems, sensors, relays, PLC inputs/outputs, switches, and control circuits.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, motors, cylinders, hoses, fittings, pressure-compensated systems, and proportional valves.
- Perform hydraulic pressure testing and identify system performance issues.
- Rebuild and repair hydraulic cylinders.
- Perform preventative maintenance (PMs) according to manufacturer recommendations and company standards.
- Repair diesel engines, cooling systems, fuel systems, transmissions, drivetrains, and braking systems.
- Diagnose engine fault codes using electronic diagnostic software and scan tools.
- Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and equipment modifications when necessary.
- Inspect equipment for safety concerns and identify potential failures before they occur.
- Complete accurate repair documentation, PM records, and work orders.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns in a timely manner to maximize production uptime.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
Experience working on equipment such as:
- Material Handlers
- Hydraulic Shears
- Balers
- Excavators
- Wheel Loaders
- Forklifts
- Conveyors
- Industrial Processing Equipment
- Five or more years of heavy equipment mechanic experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics.
- Experience troubleshooting electrical control systems.
- Knowledge of hydraulic pressures, flow, and system diagnostics.
- Experience rebuilding hydraulic cylinders.
- Ability to operate diagnostic software and electronic service tools.
- Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to safely lift up to 75 pounds and work in outdoor industrial environments.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
