Shop & Utility Laborer

Description

Position Summary

The Shop & Yard Utility Laborer supports daily operations at Harrison & Burrowes’ Glenmont shop and yard. This hands-on position assists with material handling, tool and equipment preparation, pickups and deliveries, fleet maintenance support, and facility upkeep to help keep field operations running safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities

  • Load, unload, move, stage, secure, and organize construction materials, tools, equipment, and supplies for storage or delivery to jobsites.
  • Pick up and deliver materials, tools, and supplies between vendors, company facilities, and active jobsites; operate company vehicles and coordinate trips with shop and yard management.
  • Maintain organized storage areas for formwork, structural steel, work zone traffic control materials, tool cribs, and other job supplies.
  • Operate forklifts, skid steers, loaders, and other equipment as needed, subject to training and company authorization.
  • Assist the Small Tools Manager with tool preparation, check-in/check-out, inventory, cleaning, inspections, and identification of damaged or missing items.
  • Assist shop mechanics with washing, cleaning, lubrication, routine servicing, and positioning of company vehicles and construction equipment as directed; report maintenance concerns.
  • Perform general shop and yard cleanup, scrap and debris removal, minor facility upkeep, mowing, trimming, snow removal, and seasonal grounds maintenance.
  • Maintain safe, accessible work and storage areas; use required PPE, follow company safety procedures, and report hazards or damaged equipment.
  • Provide additional general labor and shop/yard support as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required; ability to perform pickups and deliveries as assigned.
  • Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred, but not required; welding experience preferred, but not required.
  • Experience in construction, general labor, equipment yards, mechanical shops, or similar work preferred.
  • Experience operating forklifts, skid steers, loaders, or similar equipment preferred; basic mechanical knowledge and familiarity with hand and power tools are a plus.
  • Ability to safely handle and secure materials, follow instructions, work as part of a team, and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Reliable, safety-conscious, organized, and willing to assist with a variety of shop, yard, and field-support needs.
Physical & Work Environment
Work is primarily at the Glenmont shop, yard, and outdoor storage areas, with regular travel for pickups and deliveries. Duties involve frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; lifting up to 50 pounds independently, with assistance or mechanical equipment for heavier items. Work may involve outdoor weather, noise, dust, moving equipment, and vehicle traffic. Appropriate PPE is required.
Compensation & Employment Classification
  • Full-Time | Hourly | Non-Exempt, Eligible for overtime.
  • Pay Range: $25.00–$33.00 per hour, based on experience, qualifications, certifications, and skills.
