Horticultural Gardener Crew Member
Fine Gardener I
Description
Our small residential gardening company is looking for a crew member for part time work, 3-4 days per week. This is an opportunity to learn a lot about how to care for a wide variety of plants, to learn about the business of garden care, to prune artistically, to work with modern drip irrigation systems, and provide the service professionally. This can become a professional career for the right person who is passionate about horticulture, excels at garden management and can take on responsibility. Gardeners with experience are also invited to apply.
This isn't 'landscaping': it's detailed, attentive garden care, or what we call Fine Gardening. The primary qualifications are passion for gardening, love of plants, attention to detail, and ability to follow instructions and work independently as part of a team. Experience with outdoor plant care, ability to recognize common weeds, and familiarity with common plants of California landscapes is very desirable. We work in private residences and require professional behavior and presentation (clean work gear with no holes or large logos, proper work boots, friendly demeanor, and be on time all the time). You must have a reliable vehicle and speak English comfortably.
Our gardens are maintained using ecological/organic methods and most work is done by hand. It can be hard work in hot sun, so the job requires physical fitness, mobility and good health. We work in a variety of cities in the east bay from Richmond to Berkeley, Oakland and San Leandro. Wages are hourly; we offer 6 paid holidays per year (pro-rated for part time), and we are generally able to be flexible to accommodate unpaid time off. Our gardeners are employees protected by Worker's Comp insurance, and a sick time benefit beginning after 90 days. We are also willing to share costs for relevant classes and educational experiences.
To apply, please provide a cover letter and resume. Describe why you are interested in this position and detail any relevant experiences. Starting pay for an entry-level trainee is $24-26 DOE plus mileage reimbursement.
We are a queer-owned small business and encourage applicants from all walks of life.
