Job Description

Natomas Smog Shop & Auto Repair, a NAPA Auto Care Center, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Automotive Technician to join our growing team.

We are looking for an experienced, well-rounded technician with strong diagnostic and repair abilities across all makes and models, including domestic, Asian, and European vehicles.

The ideal candidate is the technician others turn to when they encounter a challenging diagnosis or repair. You should be comfortable diagnosing complex mechanical, electrical, drivability, emissions, and computer-related issues while helping maintain a high standard of workmanship throughout the shop.

This is a hands-on Lead Technician position. You will continue diagnosing and repairing vehicles while also serving as a technical resource for the rest of the team, assisting with difficult repairs, mentoring other technicians, and helping ensure work is completed correctly and efficiently.

Responsibilities

Advanced Vehicle Diagnostics & Repairs

Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, drivability, emissions, and computer-controlled vehicle systems across a wide variety of makes and models.

All Makes & Models

Confidently service and repair domestic, Asian, and European vehicles. Candidates should be comfortable adapting diagnostic and repair procedures to different manufacturers and vehicle systems.

Technical Leadership

Serve as a technical resource for other technicians. Assist with difficult diagnoses and repairs and help determine the proper testing and repair strategy when additional expertise is needed.

Mentoring & Development

Help other technicians strengthen their diagnostic and repair skills by sharing knowledge, providing guidance, and promoting proper testing and repair procedures.

Quality Control

Help maintain a high standard of workmanship throughout the shop. Verify difficult or major repairs when appropriate and help ensure vehicles are repaired correctly before being returned to customers.

Electrical & Computer Diagnostics

Diagnose electrical, electronic, network communication, module, and computer-controlled systems using modern scan tools, test equipment, wiring diagrams, and technical service information.

Workflow & Efficiency

Work closely with the service team and other technicians to keep jobs moving efficiently while maintaining high standards for diagnostic accuracy and repair quality.

Maintenance & General Repair

Perform scheduled maintenance and general automotive repairs, including brakes, steering, suspension, cooling systems, HVAC, engine repairs, fluid services, and other mechanical work.

Documentation

Maintain detailed and accurate documentation of diagnostic findings, testing performed, recommended repairs, parts used, and completed work.

Customer Communication

When needed, communicate professionally with customers and clearly explain vehicle concerns, diagnostic findings, and repair recommendations.

Equipment & Tools

Properly use and maintain automotive diagnostic equipment, specialty tools, lifts, and other shop equipment.

Safety & Compliance

Promote and follow all shop safety procedures, environmental regulations, and applicable automotive industry requirements.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of professional automotive repair experience
  • Strong experience diagnosing and repairing a wide variety of makes and models
  • Comfortable working on domestic, Asian, and European vehicles
  • Advanced diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, drivability, emissions, and computer-controlled vehicle systems
  • Proficient with modern automotive scan tools and diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to effectively use wiring diagrams, technical service information, and manufacturer repair procedures
  • Ability to independently diagnose complex vehicle concerns from initial testing through completed repair
  • Ability and willingness to assist, mentor, and provide technical guidance to other technicians
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work efficiently while maintaining high repair standards
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Formal automotive training or technical education is a plus
  • Valid California driver’s license with a clean
