We are seeking an experienced, dependable, and skilled **Lead Diesel Mechanic** to join our Mechanics Team. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical and diagnostic skills, takes pride in quality workmanship, and can independently troubleshoot, maintain, and repair heavy-duty diesel trucks and equipment while helping coordinate daily maintenance operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, maintain, and repair heavy-duty diesel mixer trucks, tractors, loaders, forklifts, and other company equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical and electronic systems, hydraulics, cooling systems, fuel systems, air conditioning, and emissions/aftertreatment systems.
- Use computerized diagnostic equipment to identify faults, determine root causes, and perform appropriate repairs.
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, routine inspections, major repairs, and component overhauls as needed.
- Inspect equipment for mechanical defects, wear, and safety concerns, and complete repairs consistent with applicable DOT, CHP, manufacturer, and workplace safety requirements.
- Evaluate, prioritize, and coordinate equipment repairs based on safety, operational needs, and vehicle downtime.
- Coordinate daily maintenance activities and communicate work priorities with other members of the Mechanics Team.
- Perform welding, fabrication, cutting, and mechanical adjustments as needed and when qualified.
- Conduct operational checks and authorized test drives to verify equipment performance after repairs.
- Troubleshoot complex mechanical issues and perform major repairs and rebuilds.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, parts used, and maintenance performed.
- Communicate repair needs, equipment conditions, and the status of out-of-service vehicles to management and dispatch.
- Monitor parts inventory, identify needed supplies, and ensure parts and materials are properly stored and recorded.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including tools and equipment.
- Follow company safety procedures, report workplace hazards and incidents promptly, and participate in required safety meetings.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in diesel truck or heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines and heavy-duty mechanical systems.
- Experience diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Proficiency with computerized diagnostic equipment and troubleshooting procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagnostic reports, and equipment specifications.
- Experience performing preventative maintenance, inspections, and mechanical repairs.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex problems, identify appropriate repairs, and work with limited supervision.
- Ability to organize and prioritize maintenance tasks based on safety and operational needs.
- Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records and communicate repair findings effectively.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and commitment to safe work practices.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a maintenance team.
- Ability to reliably report to the Lakeside, California work location.
- Ability to provide and maintain personal hand tools necessary for assigned work, consistent with applicable California law.
- Experience maintaining and repairing ready-mix concrete mixer trucks.
- Experience with Class 8 trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment.
- Familiarity with DOT/CHP vehicle inspections, air brake systems, and DVIR-related repairs.
- Experience with diesel emissions and aftertreatment systems.
- Welding and metal fabrication experience.
- ASE or other recognized diesel/heavy-duty mechanic certifications.
- CDL Class A or B is a plus but is not required.
- Previous experience coordinating maintenance activities or serving in a lead mechanic role.
