Description
Thomas Marine, an established business (50+ years) in the Marine Metal Fabrication business located in Point Loma (2835 Scott St.) is looking to hire 2 welder/fabricators.
We need 1 senior fabricator and 1 intermediate level fabricator.
A Thomas Marine Fabricator/Welder will construct, install, and repair metal yacht structures and components out of stainless steel (often polished to #8) or aluminum. We also fabricate quite a bit of handrails (stainless 316 and bronze) and ornamental features for luxury residences / public art, along with diverse items for NWIC / U.S. Navy.
Apart from the “essential duties and responsibilities” the Fabricator/Welder we seek should have the ability to:
- Schedule, multitask and be highly organized
- Have reliable transportation
- Critical thinking skills, and a good problem solver
- Comprehension skills to follow safety regulations, instruction and interpreting fabrication drawings
- Verbal communication, social and interpersonal skills, ability to speak English
- Ability to follow directions from yacht owners
- Understanding of Fabrication / Installation drawings
- Solid understanding of CA & ADA handrail / stairway code
Verifiable TIG welding experience. You will be asked to perform a quick TIG welding exam as part of the interview that should take no longer than 15 minutes. You will be asked to weld 1” OD (.065”) tube to tube (pre-coped).
Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in metal fabrication/welding stainless and aluminum.
Regular use of a variety of common metal fab hand-held and motorized fab tools and machinery is preferred
Standing for extending periods of time is common, as is welding outdoors on a yacht. We try to minimize this by making everything in the shop, but it happens.
Lifting of up to 50 pounds is required
Valid driver's license and be commercially vehicle insurable!
Have pride in their work & get along with others (this is important to all of our crew)
If you like boats, performing “boat yoga” on the biggest of superyachts that come to SoCal, racing sailboats, cruisers…you will love this job. If you like welding 8 hours a day making the same item over and over: you will not like this job.
PAY
Pay is DOE and ranges from $23-$35 to start.
We begin work at 0730hrs and end at 1600hrs. There is often voluntary weekend overtime available. 5 days paid vacation starts after 90 days. Employees are paid every week via direct deposit. 401K available.
