Mason Foreman

Description

Masonry Crew Lead / Foreman — Portland Metro Masonry

Portland Metro Masonry is a family-owned masonry contracting business based in Portland's Richmond neighborhood, with 25+ years in the trade. We specialize in chimney repair and rebuilding, fireplace restoration, flagstone patios, brick facades, retaining walls, and tuck pointing. We take pride in our work, and we're looking for an experienced Crew Lead/Foreman to help run jobs day to day.

The Role

We need a hands-on Crew Lead/Foreman who can run masonry jobs from start to finish — reading plans, staying on schedule, keeping quality tight, and managing a small crew on-site. This is a leadership role for someone who's already a skilled mason and is ready to take ownership of jobs, not just work them.
Compensation: Commission-based. Set percentage per project.

What You'll Do

Lead and oversee day-to-day work on job sites — chimneys, fireplaces, flagstone patios, brick facades, retaining walls, and repointing projects
Read and work from plans/specs, and keep jobs on schedule and on budget
Be the face of the job on-site: communicate clearly and warmly with clients, keep them updated on progress, and answer their questions
Direct your crew and genuinely mentor your assistants — teach the trade, don't just bark orders
Keep the jobsite clean and tidy every single day before wrapping up, and leave it spotless with a thorough final cleanup when the job is done
Run a quiet, respectful worksite — you're working in someone's home or yard, so keep disruption to their day to a minimum and treat their property like it's your own
Ensure jobsite safety and that finished work meets our quality standards
Coordinate material deliveries and equipment needs for each job

What We're Looking For

10+ years of hands-on masonry experience, including brick, block, and/or stone work
Prior experience leading or supervising a crew
Strong knowledge of masonry techniques, tools, and materials
Your own reliable truck (in good working condition) and tools; trailer if needed
Valid driver's license
Physically able to perform demanding masonry work outdoors in all conditions
A genuinely friendly, easygoing manner with clients — someone homeowners feel comfortable having on their property
Patience and a teaching mindset with less-experienced crew members
Respect for everyone you work with and around, full stop

Jobsite Safety

As Crew Lead, jobsite safety is your responsibility. Every project gets run to OSHA standards, and hazards get addressed immediately — never worked around.
Enforce OSHA jobsite safety standards on every project
Conduct daily safety checks and address hazards immediately
Ensure proper PPE use by yourself and your crew at all times
Model safe practices at all times — no shortcuts, ever
Report and document any incidents or near-misses

Who We Want

We're just as picky about character as we are about skill. This job is in people's homes, so we need someone who's easy to have around — courteous with clients, patient with the crew, and respectful of other people's space and property. We're an inclusive, LGBTQ+-friendly business and expect the same respect for everyone on the crew and every client we work with, no exceptions.
If you're a great mason but not great with people, this probably isn't the right fit.

Why Work With Us

Family-owned business with 25+ years of local reputation and repeat customers
Steady pipeline of chimney, fireplace, patio, and repointing work across the Portland metro area
Autonomy to run jobs your way — we're not a big bureaucratic outfit
A respectful, drama-free crew culture

Equal Opportunity Employer

Portland Metro Masonry is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We hire and promote based on skill, character, and work ethic — nothing else. We welcome applicants of every race, ethnicity, national origin, age, and ability, and we strongly encourage people of all gender identities and expressions — women, men, and non-binary applicants alike — to apply. Every person on our crew, and every client we serve, deserves the same respect, and that's the standard we hold ourselves to.
