Description

Basic Purpose:

The Mechanic Shop Supervisor manages activities and supervises employees involved in the mechanic department's operations, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of all mobile and stationary heavy equipment. This role assures process, production requirements, and quality expectations are met while coordinating maintenance and repair activities across the facility. The Mechanic Shop Supervisor supervises, trains, and coordinates the work of mechanics, serves as a knowledge resource for the team, and works closely with other department leaders to ensure a total approach to equipment maintenance and reliability.

Job Responsibilities

Leadership & Coordination

Supervises, trains, and coordinates the work of mechanics and shop personnel
Provides direction and leadership to the departmental team to achieve high quality, productivity, and safety standards
Delegates work and set deadlines to meet on-time delivery and production needs
Starts each shift on time and ensures all team members are present and assigned work in order of priority
Meets with leads/supervisors every morning to review daily plans
Cross-trains employees so that, in the event of absenteeism, there is enough backup to maintain normal operations
Monitors team performance and reports to office (e.g., Paylocity Journaling/Reviewing) for performance evaluations
Works with HR to provide feedback on employee performance
Coordinates and communicates with the Operations team and other department leaders on all repair and maintenance matters
Safety & Compliance

Ensures safe work practices and equipment are used at all times, and that documentation, inspections, and current practices are in accordance with corporate safety policies, OSHA, and other regulatory guidelines
Creates and enforces Health & Safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with Management and the Safety team
Ensures all employees receive timely safety and operational training
Ensures proper housekeeping and safe working conditions throughout the shop and yard
Equipment Maintenance & Repair

Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, or overhauls mobile mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems on support, production, and maintenance equipment in the recycling industry
Repairs and replaces damaged or worn parts on mobile equipment
Dismantles and reassembles heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools
Operates and inspects fleet or heavy equipment to diagnose defects
Tests mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturer specifications
Cleans, lubricates, and performs other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles
Repairs and maintains recycling equipment including, but not limited to: cranes, front-end loaders, forklifts, skid steers, telehandlers, material handlers, OTR fleet, rail support equipment, support vehicles, and implements such as grapples and buckets
Ensure operation of commercial trucks and trailers by completing preventive maintenance on engines, hydraulics, and transmissions per manufacturer's instructions and engineering specifications
Performs diagnostics prior to repairs to ensure correct parts are purchased/replaced and correct repairs are performed
Operates metalworking machinery as needed, including band saw, lathe, and welder
Scheduling, Inventory & Reporting

Schedules preventative and as-needed maintenance, coordinating with department supervisors and other mechanics
Reviews repair and maintenance needs with Management and provides a general plan describing scheduled repairs, upgrades, and major projects
Determines necessary parts to order and lead times needed to maintain efficient and effective equipment functioning
Places orders for equipment, parts, and spares as needed
Manages spare components and wear-parts inventory; issues, tracks, and requests reorder of inventory stores
Follows paper-flow procedures by documenting all repairs on work orders and adhering to parts-ordering procedures
Schedules manpower, equipment, downtime, and timelines for major projects
Ensures accurate daily maintenance and production reporting
Conserves mobile maintenance resources by using equipment and supplies efficiently to accomplish job results
Prepares mobile maintenance documents by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information
Maintains continuity among work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs
Continuous Improvement

Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement in equipment reliability, safety, and efficiency
Searches for the most efficient repair and maintenance solutions
