Description

The part time art handler/preparator position is responsible for the safe and secure movement of artworks to and from the gallery, as well as gallery installations and client home installations. They are responsible for inspecting, packing, transporting, installing/de-installing and storage of artworks, as well as updating the registrar on all movement of artwork. They will report to the gallery director and work daily with the registrar for all in house and shipping art logistics. The art handler/preparator will be required to maintain a clean driving record and will regularly be required to rent vehicles for installations in the immediate region (paid by gallery).

For exhibition preparation, they will complete tasks beyond artwork installation, such as repair/painting of interior walls, application of wall vinyl with exhibition details, exhibition lighting after the artwork is installed, maintenance of exterior gallery appearance (trimming greenery, cleaning windows and painting over graffiti.

This is a small team of three, so communication, teamwork and a positive attitude is essential. This position is guaranteed 21-24 hours per week with additional hours as needed during exhibition change overs (additional hours paid on hourly rate). Starting pay for this position is between $28-$30 hourly, paid on a scheduled/salaried basis once schedule is confirmed, with end of year bonuses. Year one PTO is equivalent to the hours worked in a typical week (increasing to two weeks after one year), as well as several holidays (depending on schedule) and PTO between December 23rd-January 1st.

duties and requirements:

  • 2+ years of art handling experience in a museum, gallery, artist studio, private collection or similar environment, familiarity with standard museum practices, terminology, and art history
  • Must pass complete background check
  • Possess driver’s license and maintain a clean record
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, and up to 100
  • Maintain prepartor tasks on shared gallery calendar, updated at end of each shift along with daily notes.
  • Gallery checklists must be used and maintained for all tasks to insure accuracy and safety.
  • Clear understanding of archival and other packing materials for various mediums and proper art handling standards and practices.
  • Detailed inspection of artworks prior to and at completion of all movement and communication of any concerns or issues
  • Complete condition notes and documentation as required
  • Demonstrate understanding and use of both paper and electronic forms, proprietary and operational software (work orders, inventories, bills of lading, etc) and maintain accurate records (extremely important)
  • Maintain tool kit and materials for all in gallery and client installation/movement, proficiency with hand and power tools. Materials should be ordered ahead of tasks to insure efficiency of scheduled time.
  • Maintain a professional appearance/behavior at all times. Must be prepared to discuss artwork with clients if addressed.
  • Professional installation of work, including use of proper tools and hardware both in gallery and client homes
  • Communication with director and registrar is essential for operations
