Description

Seeking an experienced, hands-on Safety Manager to lead and manage our company-wide safety program.

UGS performs underground utility and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) work throughout Colorado and surrounding areas. This position requires someone who understands the hazards associated with heavy civil construction, excavation, underground utilities, heavy equipment, traffic control, and active construction sites.

This is a field-focused safety position. The Safety Manager will be expected to regularly visit active jobsites, work directly with field crews and supervisors, identify hazards, correct unsafe conditions, provide training, and ensure UGS employees are following company, customer, and regulatory safety requirements.

The ideal candidate is someone who can build a strong safety culture while maintaining positive working relationships with field employees. The Safety Manager must also be comfortable stopping work when an immediate safety hazard exists.

Key Responsibilities

Field Safety

Conduct regular and unannounced jobsite safety inspections.
Identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, equipment, and work practices.
Work directly with supervisors and crews to correct safety deficiencies.
Exercise stop-work authority when an imminent or serious safety hazard exists.
Conduct and document jobsite safety audits.
Monitor excavation, trenching, drilling, equipment operation, and underground utility activities.
Verify appropriate PPE is being used and maintained.
Assist crews in identifying hazards before work begins.
Ensure required safety documentation is available and completed at jobsites.
Excavation & Underground Utility Safety

Provide oversight and guidance regarding:

Excavation and trenching
Protective systems
Sloping, benching, shielding, and shoring
Competent Person inspections
Safe access and egress
Underground utility locating
Potholing/daylighting
Utility strike prevention
Horizontal directional drilling operations
Heavy equipment hazards
Spotters and backing procedures
Traffic and pedestrian exposure
Confined-space hazards, when applicable
Lockout/tagout and hazardous energy, when applicable
Safety Programs & Documentation
Develop, maintain, and continuously improve UGS's written safety programs, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities include:

Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) / Job Safety Analyses (JSAs)
Daily and weekly safety documentation
Toolbox talks
Site-specific safety plans
New-hire safety orientation
Employee training records
Certification and expiration tracking
PPE policies
Emergency response procedures
Equipment-related safety procedures
Customer-specific safety requirements
Subcontractor safety compliance
OSHA-required documentation and recordkeeping

What We're Looking For

The successful candidate will be someone who is comfortable spending significant time in the field and interacting directly with construction crews.

Physical & Work Requirements

This position requires regular travel to active construction sites and may involve:
Walking on uneven terrain
Working around excavation and heavy equipment
Exposure to outdoor weather conditions
Standing and walking for extended periods
Wearing required PPE
Driving between multiple jobsites
Occasional early-morning or after-hours site visits depending on project operations
