Scenic Stagehand for NYC Event Fabrication Installations

The Scenic Stagehand is a hands-on, on-site role responsible for unloading, custom-fitting, assembling, and striking scenic structures, decor elements, and modular staging at venue locations. Working directly on location, this position combines site assembly skills with general stagecraft—building custom scenic elements, setting up stage decks, mounting decor, and making real-time structural adjustments to deliver finished set builds on tight event timelines.

Key Responsibilities

1. Custom Assembly & Site Fabrication
On-Site Construction: Assemble, fit, and modify scenic structures, framing, wall panels, platforms, and decor elements directly on site using portable shop and site tools. Fasteners & Joining: Use pneumatic fasteners, cordless drivers, hardware, and structural brackets to securely join and reinforce scenic units and decorative pieces. Structural Integration: Perform real-time site adjustments to ensure scenic and decor pieces align properly with existing venue dimensions and unleveled floors.

2. Staging & Decor Installation
Modular Decking: Unpack, level, lock together, and skirt modular stage platforms, risers, guardrails, and access ramps. Decor Mounting & Styling: Rig, mount, align, and dress custom decor pieces, display walls, backdrops, and scenic accents to match design aesthetics. Finishing Touches: Apply fascia, baseboards, edge trims, perimeter masking, and visual touch-ups to ensure a clean, seamless finish across all scenic structures and decor.

3. Load-In, Unloading & Site Assembly
Unloading Operations: Safely unload trucks, freight containers, and vans carrying raw materials, pre-built scenic modules, decor pieces, heavy staging decks, and tool trunks. Site Organization: Stage materials systematically in designated venue layout zones according to build order and ground plans. Strike & Packing: Carefully disassemble scenic structures and decor post-event, pull hardware, pack delicate decor items safely, and pack trucks for transport.

4. Blueprint Reading & Site Safety
Read and interpret scenic ground plans, elevation drawings, section views, and assembly guides to execute precise builds. Maintain an organized, clean, and safe job site; strictly follow OSHA guidelines, venue safety policies, and proper PPE use at all times.

Qualifications & Physical Requirements

Technical Skills

Scenic & Decor Assembly: 2+ years of hands-on experience in scenic construction, decor installation, custom display fabrication, or event setup. Tool Mastery: Skilled in operating jobsite power tools (miter saws, circular saws, track saws, routers, pneumatic guns, and cordless drills). Staging & Decor: Familiarity with modular stage deck systems (e.g., Staging Concepts, Wenger) and installing hard-surface decor components. Plan Reading: Ability to interpret scale drawings, scenic elevations, and structural build sheets.

Physical & Working Conditions

100% On-Site Position: Works exclusively on location at event spaces, convention centers, studios, and outdoor stages (no remote option). Physical Demands: Must be able to continuously lift, move, and maneuver heavy materials and decks up to 75 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding, and work on your feet for extended shifts. Flexible Schedule: Ability to work irregular hours—including early morning load-ins, overnight builds, and weekend strikes—aligned with production schedules.
