Sampson Steel Company Inc., a well-established structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication company serving Alaska’s construction industry, is seeking an experienced Steel Shop lead fitter.

We specialize in structural steel, misc. metals, and custom fabrication for commercial and industrial construction. We are looking for a strong leader with journeyman-level steel fabrication skills who can manage people, production, and quality.

Position: Steel Shop Foreman

Location: Anchorage, Alaska

Key Responsibilities

Lead and supervise daily shop fitter operations
Manage workflow, crew assignments, and schedule coordination
Read and interpret structural and misc steel fabrication drawings and blueprints
Oversee welding, fitting, and fabrication to ensure high quality and accuracy
Maintain a clean, safe, OSHA-compliant work environment
Train, mentor, and support shop employees
Communicate with project managers, estimators, and field crews
Monitor material use, equipment needs, and shop productivity

Required Skills & Experience

Journeyman-level steel fabrication experience
Strong welding and fitting skills (MIG/Flux-core, structural welding)
Previous experience as a foreman, lead fabricator, or shop supervisor
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and structural blueprints
Strong understanding of shop processes, layout, tolerances, and quality control
Ability to manage people professionally and maintain workflow under deadlines
Commitment to safety and industry standards

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication
AWS welding certifications
Familiarity with Alaska construction practices
Experience working with erection crews or coordinating shop-to-field workflow

Compensation

Starting wage: $135,000 yr

Performance-based bonuses and periodic wage reviews
